The 2019 Yankees season is not off to a great start.
Didi Gregorius will need Tommy John surgery on his right throwing elbow after suffering an injury in the ALDS. There is no timetable yet for his return.
“We’re optimistic he’ll be back. … There’s a real chance he’ll play the bulk of the season with us,” manager Aaron Boone said during his end-of-season conference after the Yankees made the announcement Friday.
Boone said the shortstop suffered the injury after retrieving and throwing in a ball from left field in either Game 1 or 2 in Boston.
Gregorius tore cartilage in his wrist before the postseason but was able to play through the injury in the playoffs.
