Chef accused of harassment wants to make amends with dunk tank

A sleazy California chef who was accused of sexual harassment by more than 30 employees has announced a bizarre plan to atone for his slime-ball behavior — by subjecting himself to a “dunk tank” once a month.

Oakland restaurateur Charlie Hallowell — who stepped away from his eateries late last year after workers revealed he bombarded them with creepy come-ons and lewd language — proposed the monthly dunkings as part of a 12-point plan for returning to work.

“Once a month a dunk tank will be set up in the backyard at Pizzaiolo. Charlie will be in the dunk seat and anyone who wants to put him in the tank can come and give it a shot!” he wrote in an “open letter to the Oakland community” published by Eater on Thursday.

Women working at Hallowell’s celebrated restaurants have told the San Francisco Chronicle that their boss talked about sex non-stop, with one describing it as “sexual Tourette’s disorder.”

“If a pizza dough is formed properly, it should feel like a fat girl’s tit,” former Boot & Shoe bartender Jessica Moncada recalled him saying.

Others variously told the paper he propositioned them, kissed them or touched them inappropriately.

In his open letter, Hallowell apologized for his “inappropriate speech and behavior” and creating an environment “that was unsafe for women,” but claimed he’s “wholeheartedly committed to real personal change.”

In addition to the dunk tank, his plan includes handing over partial ownership of his restaurant group to a woman, creating an all-female board of advisers, donating money to domestic violence shelters — and to see therapists and social workers who specialize in “toxic masculinity, white privilege, and the reality of and consequences for all of us living within a fundamentally sexist patriarchy.”
